A lot of shame and stigma
Is associated with getting tested for STDs especially among young people. Our STD testing process is tailor-made for people of all ages to get STD testing without worrying about their privacy. According to the CDC, all STDs have treatment and many such as chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis are curable.
According to reports from the Virginia Department of Health cases of chlamydia are on the rise with 2,237 cases reported in 2014. The gonorrhea prevalence in Virginia Beach is low but the rate of infection continues to rise. The prevalence rate (per 100, 000 people) was at 122.6 in 2014 with 550 reported cases in the city.
The rate of primary and secondary P&S syphilis is relatively low at 2.9 per 100,000 people with only 13 cases reported in 2014. Syphilis must be diagnosed and treated on time otherwise, it could lead to serious medical complications such as birth defects (congenital syphilis), ocular syphilis and neurosyphilis.
The 2014 HIV infection in Virginia stood at 14.4 per 100,000 people and there were 65 new HIV diagnoses in the same year. Young people in the 15-24 age group accounted for 25% of the reported HIV infections in 2014.
The most affected racial/ethnic group by the spread of STDs in Virginia Beach were African Americans followed by Caucasians.
Young people in the 15-24 age group were the most affected by chlamydia-infected accounting for 67% of the total chlamydia infections in 2014. The same age group had the highest gonorrhea and P&S syphilis cases accounting for 58% and 24% of the infections respectively. It is clear that young people need a comprehensive sex education curriculum to educate them on the STD risk factors and the misconceptions about STD testing.
