According to the California Department of Health, chlamydia cases are the highest compared to other reported sexually transmitted infections in Stockton and the greater San Joaquin region. There were 3,512 new chlamydia infections in 2014 and the number of infection had increased 3.8% from the previous year.
The gonorrhea diagnoses in 2014 were 985 cases and increased slightly by 4% from the previous year. There was low infection rate of new primary and secondary P&S syphilis in Stockton and the greater San Joaquin valley region with 88 new infections reported in 2014 compared to 73 cases in the previous year. The complications from untreated syphilis (congenital, ocular and neuro-syphilis) are far more severe compared to gonorrhea or chlamydia.
Chlamydia infections were highest among those in the 15-24 age group who accounted for 64% of the total infections in San Joaquin County. The same age group reported the highest gonorrhea and P&S syphilis accounting for 45% and 22% of the infections respectively.
The women in San Joaquin County were the most affected by chlamydia and accounted for 71% of the total cases in 2014. Gonorrhea affected both males and females in the county equally. P&S syphilis cases were highest among males accounting for 81% of the total diagnoses in 2014.
The STD were distributed among the various races/ethnic groups with the Hispanic community accounting for 26% of the chlamydia infections followed by blacks at 16%. Gonorrhea cases were highest among the Hispanic population accounting for 23% of the diagnoses. P&S syphilis cases were highest among the whites while men who have sex with men were most vulnerable to HIV transmissions.
