Gonorrhea cases increased from 2,047 new infections in 2013 to 2,583 cases the following year.
Primary and secondary P&S syphilis cases increased from 76 to 99 cases between 2013 and 2014. The state of California had the fourth highest rate of P&S syphilis prevalence nationwide. The HIV prevalence rate in San Bernardino declined from 72.2 to 69.5 per 100,000 people from 2013 to 2014.
Since young people are the most affected, a comprehensive sex education curriculum is needed to enlighten them on the risk factors and the importance of testing.
Approximately 72% of the chlamydia cases were females. On the other hand, 51% of the gonorrhea cases were males. The lion’s share of P&S syphilis cases were males accounting for 90% of the total new cases.
Hispanics had the most chlamydia cases accounting for 18% followed by blacks at 8%. Gonorrhea cases were highest among blacks accounting for 18% of the new diagnoses in 2014. The P&S syphilis cases were highest among Hispanics accounting for 46% of the new infections.
