If you engage in unprotected sex, have multiple sexual partners or belong to high-risk groups such as men who have sex with men you are highly vulnerable to STDs. According to the Nevada Health Department, the HIV prevalence in Reno and the wider Washoe County region has been on the rise from 5.8 to 8.8 per 100,000 people between 2012 and 2013. However, this was low compared to the state rate of 15.9 per 100,000 people.
Washoe County accounted for 14.5% of the total chlamydia cases reported in the state in 2012. In the same year, there were 238 new diagnoses of gonorrhea and 16 cases of primary and secondary P&S syphilis. Syphilis is less prevalent however it can lead to serious complications if not diagnosed and treated early enough.
Women accounted for 1,629 cases of chlamydia in 2012 and were the most affected. Approximately 59.7% of the gonorrhea cases in Washoe County in 2012 were males.
In terms of demographics, the cases of chlamydia were most prevalent among whites who accounted for 24% of the total cases. Blacks were the most affected by the spread of gonorrhea and accounted for 31% of the reported cases. Syphilis infections in the state of Nevada were highest among Caucasians accounting for 51% of the total infections.
HIV infection was highest among men who have sex with men who accounted for approximately 76% of the new HIV diagnoses in 2013.
