Majority of STDs in Philadelphia are on the decline. Chlamydia the most widely reported in Philadelphia County. The cases of chlamydia reduced form 19,570 new diagnoses in 2013 to 18,935 in 2014 with the highest number of cased reported in 2012 with 20.803 cases.
Gonorrhea came in 2nd place with the number new cases reducing slightly from 6,303 in 2013 to 5,961 new diagnoses in 2014. The asymptomatic nature of gonorrhea and chlamydia make it hard to diagnose without testing.
The total number of syphilis cases increased from 962 new diagnoses in 2013 to 894 new infections in 2014. The number of cases of new HIV diagnoses has been fluctuating from 675 new infections in 2011 increasing to 730 cases in 2013 and the reducing to 674 new cases in 2014. The number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Philadelphia area is 30,564 people. The number of cases of Hepatitis B and C in 2014 was 7 and 10 cases respectively.
In terms of demographics, in 2014, 8663 cases of chlamydia infections were female between the age group of 15 and 24. Males between the age of 20 and 34 accounted for 2,142 cases of the total 5.952 gonorrhea infections in Philadelphia. Out of the 332 cases of Primary and secondary (P&S), syphilis cases reported 109 cases were concentrated between the age group of 25 and 34. Blacks in Philadelphia County accounted for 74% of the new HIV diagnoses followed by Hispanics at 12% and whites at 11%.
