STD Surveillance Quarterly Report the most commonly reported STD in Norfolk County and the entire state was chlamydia. The number of chlamydia diagnoses declined slightly from 3132 cases in 2013 to 2,835 in 2014 with the rate reducing from 1,272.5 to 1.151.8 per 100,000 people. The rate of chlamydia in Norfolk County was higher than the state average of 429.4 per 100,000 people. Those between age 20 and 24 were the most affected statewide with a rate of infection of 504.4 per 100,000 people.
The number of gonorrhea diagnoses in Norfolk County increased from 755 cases in 2013 to 795 cases in 2014. The rate of gonorrhea infections went up from 306.7 to 323 per 100,000 people over the same period. Blacks had the highest rate of gonorrhea infection statewide at 309.1 per 100,000 people.
The number of diagnoses of Primary and Secondary (P&S) syphilis declined from 29 cases in 2013 to 17 cases in 2014 with rate lowering from 11.8 to 6.9 per 100,000 people. The rate of P&S syphilis infection is highest among blacks with a statewide rate of 8.8 per 100,000 people. The most affected are those between age 25 and 29 with a statewide rate of 10.3 per 100,000 people. Syphilis can lead to serious complications or even worse death if left untreated.
The number of new HIV diagnoses increased reduced from 83 cases in 2013 to 72 cases in 2014. The rate of new HIV infections went down from 33.8 to 29.3 per 100,000 people. Whites accounted for 29% of the new HIV infections while 60% were Black. Male-to-male sexual contact is responsible for 47% of the new infections. For new HIV infections to decline even further more people in Norfolk must be encouraged to get tested.
